K-12 Student Art Contest

The University of Alaska hosts a statewide student art contest in celebration of the International Polar Year.

Themes

Students from Alaska are encouraged to create a piece of artwork that reflects an IPY theme such as climate change, global warming, polar-regions, or people of the north. Students may also design a work of art based on one of the IPY poster themes.

Display and Publishing

The artwork will be displayed through any of the following venues:

  • Public display at a museum or gallery in Fairbanks, AK
  • Online on the IPY Website
Printed materials such as calendars, post cards, and announcements may be published (credit will be given to the artist).

General Contest Rules/Information

Although K12 students worldwide may submit artwork for display at the final exhibition, the competition is open only to Alaska K12 students.

There will be five divisions by grade-level and/or age:

  • K-2 (Ages 5-7)
  • 3-5 (Ages 7-9)
  • 6-8 (Ages 10-12)
  • 9-10 (Ages 13-15)

Works in all media are eligible including:

  1. drawings*
  2. paintings*
  3. photographs
  4. collages*
  5. crafts*
  6. sculpture*
  7. mobiles*
  8. computer generated graphic
  9. multimedia (limited to 10 minutes)

*For electronic submission of this media, please submit a digital photograph or scan of your piece.

Each piece of artwork must be an original piece that is solely the work of the student – no work may be directly copied from a published photograph, magazine or book illustration or any other artwork. The artwork must be made during the current school year and authenticated by the IPY POC at the school, an art program teacher/instructor or school principal.

Electronic Submission

Electronic artwork submissions must be handled by a School Art Representative who has already registered as a Point of Contact on this site. If you have not already done so, click here to register as a Point of Contact.

Please limit your electronic submissions to a file size of 10 megabytes and constrain your photographs to a size of 800 pixels in width by 800 pixels in height.
